We Won’t Let One Mistake Define Your Future!

Driving Without a License in Connecticut

Don’t Let a Ticket Cost You Your License!

It is unlawful for a person to operate a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. Driving without a license is therefore a punishable offense that may result in fines and other consequences depending on the circumstances of the citation. If you or someone you know has received a ticket for driving without a license, you may have cause to fight your ticket, and the Connecticut traffic ticket lawyers at The Sills Law Firm may be able to help. To consult an attorney on the specific facts of your case, please contact the firm for a risk-free case review.

What is Considered Driving Without a License?

Driving without a license can refer to the following scenarios:

  • You have your driver’s license, but you don’t have it on your person – If you can’t provide law enforcement with your license during a traffic stop, this is considered an infraction and you may be fined.
  • Your license expired or you never applied for a license – C.G.S. § 14-36 makes it clear that driving privileges are only extended to those with valid driver’s licenses. If you are caught driving without a license or on an expired license, you could be fined and, if you’ve been caught before, you could even face jail time. You will also have to obtain a valid license.
  • Your license was suspended, revoked, or canceled – If the authorities have taken your license away and you are caught driving, you could be charged with a misdemeanor and face a fine of up to $200 and up to 90 days in jail. For a second or subsequent offense, that penalty is increased to up to $600 in fines and up to one year in jail. Read more about Operating Under Suspension.

It may be in your best interests to seek the advice of an experienced traffic ticket attorney to learn whether there are any legal defenses that apply to your case. Each case is different, so don’t assume there is no hope! Call us today.
