Driving Without a License in Connecticut

Don’t Let a Ticket Cost You Your License!

It is unlawful for a person to operate a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. Driving without a license is therefore a punishable offense that may result in fines and other consequences depending on the circumstances of the citation. If you or someone you know has received a ticket for driving without a license, you may have cause to fight your ticket, and the Connecticut traffic ticket lawyers at Tomeo Sills, LLC may be able to help. What is Considered Driving Without a License?

Driving without a license can refer to the following scenarios:

  • You have your driver’s license, but you don’t have it on your person. If you can’t provide law enforcement with your license during a traffic stop, this is considered an infraction and you may be fined.
  • Your license expired or you never applied for a license. C.G.S. § 14-36 makes it clear that driving privileges are only extended to those with valid driver’s licenses. If you are caught driving without a license or on an expired license, you could be fined and, if you’ve been caught before, you could even face jail time. You will also have to obtain a valid license.
  • Your license was suspended, revoked, or cancelled. If the authorities have taken your license away and you are caught driving, you could be charged with a misdemeanor and face a fine of up to $200 and up to 90 days in jail. For a second or subsequent offense, that penalty is increased to up to $600 in fines and up to one year in jail. Read more about Operating Under Suspension.
