The Installation of Ignition Interlock Devices

Facing DUI Charges? Tomeo Sills, LLC Is Here for You.

Individuals who have been arrested and charged with certain types of DUI violations may be ordered to complete the Ignition Interlock Device (IID) program. This program mandates that an approved breathalyzer device must be installed in each of the vehicles that the individual operates. This is done to prevent subsequent arrests for DUI and to protect the safety of the community at large.

After a DUI conviction, you may reclaim driving privileges by serving the license suspension time and meeting the following requirements of the IID program:

  • Pay the statutory fee
  • Have a valid driver's license and registration
  • Resolve all the matters with respect to your license suspension
  • Complete an application and pay an administration fee
  • Install an IID in each vehicle you operate at your own expense

How Does the Connecticut IID Program Work?

The IID takes the breath alcohol content of the driver before allowing them to operate the vehicle. Even if you have a small amount of alcohol in your system, such as .01, the zero tolerance device will not allow the vehicle engine to start. It will not send a signal to law enforcement that you have violated the conditions of the program. However, if you manipulate the device and are caught driving with alcohol in your system, you will face other charges and penalties. There are a group of vendors across Connecticut who have been approved to install IIDs. Generally speaking, the cost for installing the device is around $75 to $150, and $100 to have it recalibrated each month.
